Welcome everyone to the new S.A.C.N.A.S Student Chapter Home Page for Santa Barbara City College!
The mission of SACNAS (Society for Advancement of Chicanos and Native Americans in Science) is to encourage Chicano/Latino and Native American students to pursue graduate education and obtain the advanced degrees necessary for science research, leadership, and teaching careers at all levels.
For over 30 years, SACNAS has provided strong national leadership in improving and expanding opportunities for minorities in the scientific workforce and academia; mentoring college students within science, mathematics and engineering; as well as, supporting quality pre-college science education. SACNAS' annual National Conference and K-12 Teacher Workshops, student chapters, e-Mentoring Program, and online internship/job placement resources are tools that help a diverse community of undergraduate and graduate students, professors, administrators, and K-12 educators achieve expertise within their disciplines.
As you can see we are part of a bigger organization which has an official web page http://www.sacnas.org/. We are an official student chapter and not just another club on campus. Our goal is to be a mentor club by outreaching to city college students as well as to our community the importance of a higher education. Their is a national conference that is free to all those who become a part of SACNAS which is held at different locations each year. Where you can network with many people from industry and also see what kinds of research is being done at the University level. We also have a yearly banquet that is free for friends and family, made possible from raising money by selling Discovery Dinning Books. We offer plenty of community service opportunities, like helping kids at Cesar Chavez Charter School or the Fighting Back Mentoring Program allowing members to give back to the community, expand their resume and possibilities of getting accepted to their school of choice.
There are more pages on the left hand side explaining in dept all of the programs talked about and various resources we are involved with. Thanks for stopping by and taking a look at our web page!
